Carving screws are a traditional way of holding work for 3 dimensional carving.
The tapered part of the screw is turned into a pre-drilled hole in the base or back of the carving and tightened by using a wrench or the hole which is punched in the wing nut. The remaining screw is fastened through a bench dog hole or similar mounting feature.
