They are designed to accomplish tasks that just can not be completed by your typical standard plane. The weight is all in the front end of the plane, this helps to positively register the sole.

Without the support in the front the plane handles more like a paring chisel. These planes make for a wonderful clean-up tool, excellent at removing dried glue or flush trimming plugs and joints. It is comfortable to use, similar to a block plane.
